Paul Revere Charter Middle School & Magnet Center in Pacific Palisades, California, of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) provides a comprehensive Agricultural Education Program as defined by the National Council for Agricultural Education delivered through three major components: 1) classroom/laboratory instruction (contextual learning), 2) supervised agricultural experience programs (work-based learning), and 3) student leadership experiences. This is accomplished with classroom instruction, participation in FFA Career Education competitions (Horticulture), the Horticulture Club, monthly work days on the farm, and with experiential learning at the farm, field trips, and farm work days. The program works with local community members to secure financial support, engage local community groups, and access the expertise of local agricultural professionals.
The program at Paul Revere Middle School seeks to provide students with a balanced instructional experience that includes instruction on Animal Science, Horticulture, Floral Design, Ag. Business, Ag. Engineering, and Natural Resource Management using the framework of the California Career and Technical Education Standards in Agricultural Sciences, and integrated with students' academic coursework and the major features of the California agriculture industry. It serves a diverse student body in grades 6-8 through a variety of agricultural elective courses, including 6th grade Exploratory class, Horticulture, Floral Design, and Environmental Studies. Instruction is provided using the two acre school farm that includes a vineyard, orchard, native garden, pond, outdoor stage, farm plots, greenhouse, lath house, composting center, raised beds, hiking trail, and animal housing.
Paul Revere Middle School provides agricultural instruction to over 500 students annually, and agricultural experiences to approximately 200 more students, representing one third of the total student body.
