Item Description

Color is the element of art that has most influenced Joy Whitehurst’s work. “I
can recall early memories of gazing up at the kaleidoscopic colors of the Tiffany
windows that adorn the sanctuary of St. Paul's Episcopal Church; those windows
served as the main stylistic element of the composition for this piece,” she said.
“They represent not only the physical space of our church, but also the love and
sense of belonging that I experience as a parishioner here.”

The subject matter was inspired by a woman who attends the weekly Emmaus
lunch program at St. Paul's and was formerly homeless. She is a mentor to other
guests who struggle with homelessness, especially young women. Joy had the
honor of speaking with her about her life experiences and she described coming
out of homelessness as akin to "crawling up a mountain." The only way to
persevere is to hold on to hope. Her words tied in beautifully with the mission
of this project and her message is made visual through this door.
