Item Description

In 1892, the internationally acclaimed English writer Rudyard Kipling and his new American bride bought 12 acres on a Vermont hillside overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. By year's end they had begun construction of their dream home, christened Naulakha, a Hindi word meaning "jewel beyond price." Adjacent to Naulakha, on the edge of the forest covering Kipling Hill, is Kipling's Carriage House, which served originally as the barn for the author's carriage and later as housing for his staff. It was built after Naulakha, completed around 1895, and emulates in many ways the architectural designs and tastes that were Kipling's.

The two-story house has a complete, spacious kitchen, and a wood-paneled living room that includes comfortable seating for reading, entertaining, and relaxing. The kitchen has a lovely southern exposure where one can sit at the tile counter and enjoy the views of the meadow, forests, and valley. Outside, there is a beautifully landscaped lawn area where you can relax in Adirondack chairs or enjoy use of the picnic table. From the kitchen patio, there is a stone pathway leading to the barn where Kipling's horses were stabled.

Within the forest, there are fabulous interconnecting trails, suitable for the average hiker, leading you either upstream to the Scott Farm, with its farm stand and fresh fruit, or downstream towards the campus of World Learning. An open meadow lies below the house, offering superb views over the Connecticut River Valley.
