Item Description

Merriam Assistant Dina Samfield will come to your home and provide your child and up to 14 of their friends with a fun, 60-90 minute, hands-on, fun science workshop on kitchen botany.

The program will emphasizes the fact that all of our food is obtained directly or indirectly from plants.  After a brief discussion about the major parts of plants and what each part does for the plants themselves, the children will work in groups to put together plant “maps” that they construct from their various parts. They will then examine assorted fruits and vegetables to determine which parts of the plants we eat. After sampling the various fruits and vegetables, everyone will plant a vegetable to grow as a houseplant.

After the program, the children will have a better understanding of the origins of their food, how plants use energy from the sun to make food and oxygen, the functions of plant parts, and the importance of plants in their daily lives. They will also gain an understanding and appreciation for nature.

Item Special Note

The instructor of the program, Dina Samfield, is an educator with over 28 years experience developing and teaching curricula, programs and activities for students, teachers and adults of all ages and skill levels. She has been a public middle and high school science teacher, and worked for 10 years as an education director for botanic gardens.

The winner of the workshop will contact Dina to arrange a time and date for the program, which includes all materials.
