Item Description

Hand Painted Ceramic Plate with Detail from Tale of the Genji

This fantastic hand painted plate is truly a work of art. Painted by master Sumi-e artist,  Shoko Ohta, this plate appears to  show  the artistic skill of classically trained painter using the  easy flow of brush and ink. Instead we learn that  that the plate was painted with the thick paints that are  used for ceramics,  with each detail painstakingly  rendered  by the artist  presenting the appearance of classic and delicate  water color.

Born in Kobe, Japan in 1930, the artist began her early study of traditional fine arts at the age of 5 under her father, Shutei Ohta I, and her aunt, Shutei Ohta II. Having acquired a passion for painting from her father, she continued her studies with Nanpu Katayama, first disciple of Taikan Yokoyama, renowned painter of the post Meiji Era.  She later developed her own distinctive style by incorporating Nanga, Yamato-e and Maruyama influences into her painting.  In 1986 she began painting on ceramics. Combining classic sumi-e motifs and traditional Shimizu yaki ceramics by Kyoto potter, Fukami Rozen, Shoko Ohta has created a remarkable, finely detailed  piece of art, depicting one of the characters from Tale of the Genji.
