Item Description
Title: Meditation
Description: There were whispers of His Holiness the Dalai Lama visiting the same place that we were nearing. We arrived in the city of Leh after dark, and we woke before the light to wait outside the monastery. This group of women sat before us, gently meditating with their mala beads. Each bead spent a moment between thumb and forefinger while lips moved slightly chanting the mantra – om mani padme hum. When he arrived, His Holiness turned in our direction, placed his hands together in a prayer, and bowed his head.
Location: Leh, India
Item Special Note
About The Photographer: Erika is a third year student at Quest, originally from London, ON.
"In my time at Quest, I am asking the question: How can we translate cultural differences? Although this question is based in language and linguistics, photography offers a different perspective. In the Visual Anthropology course, the most important thing I learned from Dr. William Thompson was to get closer. The only way to capture the nuances of (cultural) life is to leave boundaries behind and find your way inside. Get closer."
