Sarah P. Duke Gardens is a stunning 55-acre public garden in the heart of the Duke University campus and one of the premier university gardens in the country. Dedicated in 1939, Duke Gardens is one of the most visited attractions in Durham, North Carolina. It contains four major thematic areas; the Terraces and Historic Core, the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum, the Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, and the Doris Duke Center Gardens.
Since Bill LeFevre was named as Duke Gardens’ first full-time director in 2007, Duke Gardens has completed over $11,000,000 in capital projects including the Japanese Garden and Tea Pavilion, the restoration of the Roney Fountain, several recirculating water features, the Piedmont Prairie, and the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden, a pilot project of the national Sustainable Sites Initiative. In recent years, Duke Gardens has been named one of the top 10 public gardens in the country by tripadvisor.com and received Horticulture Magazine’s Award for Garden Excellence from the American Public Gardens Association.
Bill’s educational background includes a B.S. in Landscape Design from the University of Connecticut and a M.S. in Public Horticulture Administration as a fellow in the Longwood Graduate Program at the University of Delaware.
