Item Description

This is a painting of Raju, the “Crying Elephant” who lives at Wildlife SOS. It is an 8x11” acrylic paint on canvas board, painted entirely with a palette knife.

Raju’s story took the world by storm because no one had seen a crying elephant before. Raju was rescued in 2014 after being a begging elephant for 50 years. He lived in spiked changes that dug deep into his flesh producing dozens of wounds. When he first encountered Wildlife SOS he was fearful, but slowly he seemed to realize we were there to help him. When we finally managed to get him out of those spikes, the big bull had tears streaming down his face.

No more tears for Raju! He has been at the Wildlife SOS sanctuary for three years now!

About the artist:

Shaelyn Barber is a student at the University of Utah pursuing a double major in political science and communications journalism. She has been painting for nearly five years with watercolor paints and three with acrylic.

As a strong proponent for animal rights, Shaelyn was deeply touched by the story of Raju the Crying Elephant. She felt his pain as well as his joy upon release. Raju's happiness in finding a new home gives hope that other imprisoned and abused animals can find that same love someday.

Thank you Shaelyn!
