Item Description

Turn-Around for Vets (TAV) is a branch of the San Diego Woodturners (SDWT), a non-profit 501c(3) organization. TAV was founded in 2007 by Retired Navy Nurse Nan Bushley and Orthopedic surgeon and former Navy Officer Dr. Kenneth Roth. Both understood how a devastating injury can create a feeling that life as previously known-is over, and they believe that learning to turn a piece of ordinary wood, would help these courageous service members to heal beyond the physical injuries.

TAV's mission is to provide basic woodturning skills that will have a therapeutic value to active duty, (age appropriate dependents) and retirees. The program provides instructions, materials, and safety equipment for use at no cost. Lessons include but are not limited to pens, boxes and bowls. Lessons are tailored to the vet as skills progress. TAV has three locations to assist the vets; Naval Medical Center San Diego, Ca. (Balboa Hospital), Wounded Warrior Battalion-West, Camp Pendleton, Ca. and Veterans Affairs Center (ASPIRE), San Diego, CA.

The five-pen set is a collaboration of five wounded, ill or injured servicemen and women from all three sites TAV operates

  1. Navy: HM1 Jno Babtiste made the Juniper pen that is on a Rose Gold setting. HM1 Jno Babtiset has been turning with TAV for 9 months.
