ABOUT ME AND MY WORK
Donna Kabay grew up in Pennsylvania and as a young adult lived in California where she designed and maintained residential and public gardens. She later moved to New England and earned a master’s degree in landscape architecture. In the '70s, while in college, Donna developed a keen interest in photography. She began creating images of the landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes that surrounded her, working out of a makeshift darkroom in a closet in her San Francisco apartment. She held private shows and sold her work on her website, phosart.com. In 2011 she made the full-time transition to working solely in photography and the arts. At that time she also opened her gallery + studio Phosart Photography in Kennebunk. Her work has been featured in Focus Folio magazine and in exhibitions at River Tree Arts, the Gallery at the Grand in Kennebunk, 11Pleasant Gallery in Brunswick and the KPT ArtHouse.

Donna's love of photography stems from its endless possibilities as a mode of expression. “It is most often assumed that a photograph is a replica of reality, but "fine art photography is more an expression or interpretation of what the photographer sees. The photographer can take liberties with reality as easily as a painter and can use very similar tools to shape and define what they see and want to express.” From the initial idea to the final image, Donna's creative process is propelled by her desire to “develop a work that is purely personal.” She prints her photographs on fine art paper and will often further develop the final image with acrylic, watercolor, or encaustic paints.

In her work Donna believes the goal is to express her point of view through images that have a profound resonance beyond mere representation. “I want to inspire the viewer to have a new experience through my images, even if the image is of something they see every day”.

Donna currently lives and works in Kennebunk, Maine and spends winters in Europe.
