Item Description

TITLE OF PIECE: 'Breathe'

INSPIRATION FOR THE PIECE - ARTIST NEUROSCIENTIST MATCH UP:

Lindsay Rempel with the Branch Out funded project of Jeffrey Dunn from the University of Calgary and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.

'Shining a Light on Concussion'

I’ve been thinking about how the brain works and “fires” it’s own pathways. As I listened to Calgary scientist Dr. Jeff Dunn talk about brain function, it reminded me so much of tree branches. Tree branches reaching for the sky with possibility and growth. The idea of a concussion affecting the brain was visualized for me in the hoar frost. The branches frozen in place as they stretch out.

The work of Dr. J Dunn and his team was the perfect jumping off point for this piece. Their research involves developing a portable brain imaging system that uses light to detect and monitor damage in the brain from a concussion. ... Researchers measure the changes in blood oxygen levels as a marker of brain function. In my corresponding painting, I’ve included little red dots throughout the piece like the little drops of blood. I hope the viewer also feels the need to take a deep breath when looking at this painting... Like the relaxing breath when looking up at the sky and trees. A peaceful moment; and your own.

ARTIST BIO:

Lindsay Rempel Art is a hobby turned inspiration that evolved into a passion that has become our great joy. I (Lindsay) have been painting for a decade, drawing my inspiration from nature and our travel experiences. We love new experiences and treasure travelling as a family.

The work starts in my studio. We were originally in Alberta Canada, but most recently, we've been travelling North America. I am always working on new stuff and often post behind the scenes glimpses on my instagram @LREMPELART and on my Facebook page "Lindsay Rempel Art."

I started turning my paintings into textiles a few years ago. I wanted to have art that could be more functional in our everyday lives and cultivate a culture of value instead of just "more".

I carefully create, edit, print and design my work to be something treasured in your home and your life; Whether its wrapping a little one or drying your dishes.
