Ceramics is the most practiced craft in Mexico. The look of artisanal cooking and serving ware are still based on native designs and forms.
For people living in rural, small villages, the production of pottery has raised living standards. Most artisans in such areas learn the trade from their families and continue using the same techniques their ancestors used. For many, pottery sales are their only cash income.
Despite interest in traditional Mexican ceramics, the number of artisans is dropping. From 1994 to 2006, the number went from 1.5 million to 50,000 ceramic artisans. This made craftsmen almost non-existent in some states. In major cities such as Mexico City and Monterrey, there are only a handful. One reason for this is that many craft products are being replaced by cheaper pewter and plastic wares; another is that many from craft-producing areas have left to work in the United States.
Artist's Note:
Mexican designs are a mix of curlicue and dotted patterns, often using primary colors in variations. The brightness and clarity of the designs are compelling and make any table setting beautiful!
