Louise Bogan was one of the finest lyric poets of our time. W.H. Auden said of her that she "wrested beauty and truth out of dark places." She was also one of our finest critics, and a brilliant stylist of the intense and personal literary genre to which belong such diverse works as Virginia Woolf's diaries and Montaigne's Essais. In her lifetime only a few of these pieces were published, but she left behind an astonishing body of work that, taken together, forms an autobiography of sensibility--a sensibility that demands to be know and cherished.
