Item Description

Emma Bowring has donated a painting of the eye of our rescued elephant, Emma. The painting is oil on canvas.

When our team first met Emma, they kept mentioning what beautiful, light eyes she had. Once she completed her marathon journey to the Elephant Hospital, our staff photographer Mradul was able to take a picture of Emma's gorgeous eyes. This spectacular painting by Emma Bowring is based on this photo.

Size: 9in x 12in

Emma the Elephant's History

Adorned with heavy, ornamental garbs, Emma was abused as a processional elephant who spent 40 years walking on concrete surfaces and hot tarmac roads. Emma would be painted with bright colors to make her visually appealing and hide her wounds. She would lift one leg and then the other as if she were walking on hot coals. She was clearly in great pain. Her owner would force feed her alcohol as a pain remedy, but elephants don't metabolize alcohol, so it can be toxic for them.

Emma Rescued by Wildlife SOS

Emma was Wildlife SOS' first rescue of 2021. Our team was shocked to discover that her foot pads were thin and torn and embedded with pebbles, metal scraps, broken glass and rusted nails.

Emma will require intensive foot care therapy including medicated foot soaks for her torn pads and wounded cuticles. She is also given oral medication for pain management and to strengthen her joint muscles. She has shown courage that astounds us all, as she naps during treatment or plays around with her support pillows!

Emma has been the most inquisitive elephant we've rescued. She is eager to explore everything and has rewarded the team with rumbles and delightful squeaks! She also loves her naps -- maybe because it takes the weight off her poor feet.
