Item Description
"Pride of Baltimore", Limited Edition print by David Curles. Dimensional background of the Baltimore Harbor with the Clipper Ship in the forefront. The print, 4 of 500, measures 22" x 15" unframed.
David Curles started his discipline at the age of 5 when his mother sent him to the garden to draw what he saw. His work is in many national collections including the cities of Albany, Austin, Fort Worth, and Atlanta. He also invented a non-toxic printmaking technique.
Pride of Baltimore was built in 1977 in an open-air shipyard in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The Pride was the first Baltimore Clipper to be built in 150 years. She sailed more than 150,000 nautical miles in nine years before she was struck by a freak squall and tragically sunk off the coast of Puerto Rico in 1986. The name captured the spirit of the phoenix-like town. It also tapped into her maritime heritage since "Pride of Baltimore" was the nickname of Chasseur, the largest and boldest of the legendary Baltimore-built topsail schooners that helped win the War of 1812, a conflict that first launched the city as a commercial and maritime center.
