Item Description
The Museum of Russian Icons seeks to inspire the appreciation and study of Russian culture by collecting and exhibiting Russian icons and related objects. It houses one of the largest collections of such items in the world. An icon is an image of a holy image or event created by an iconographer following strict standards of the Orthodox Church. Icons are considered as religious objects rather than a work of religious art. An icon itself is not worshiped but the saint portrayed may be the focus of a believer's prayer. Most of the icons at the Museum are created with egg tempra paint on wooden boards, however they are also created with mosiac, fresco, embroidery, and metal. Their sizes can range from very small to large pieces displayed in cathedrals.
The museum itself is a work of art, housed in a 150-year old former mill building together with the adjacent courthouse and jail, whose unique interiors have been worked carefully into the gallery and display space, as well as a contemporary addition. While visiting, be sure to stop by the Tea Room to view the collection of Russian tea urns, or samovars.
