Item Description

Single Vineyard Chardonnay - Groth, Onward, and Jarvis - 3 Bottles

Like all wine varieties, the quality and character of Chardonnay can vary widely depending on many factors. The most important of which are the winemaker's intent or style and the vineyard in which the grapes are grown. Here are three different styles of Chardonnay all hailing from different single vineyards. You can clearly see, smell, taste, and feel these vineyards and the hand of the winemakers through the expression of the Chardonnay grape in the glass.

Groth Vineyards and Winery 2022 Estate Chardonnay, Hillview Vineyard, Napa Valley - 1 Bottle

Groth 2022 Estate Chardonnay captures the quintessential characteristics of its varietal and provenance. Inviting aromas of crème brûlée, green apple, ripe cantaloupe and apricot jam greet the nose with an underlay of orange blossom, lychee and baking spice. The palate is rich and luxurious with an opulent surge of grilled peach and yellow plum kept in focus by a lift of orange zest acidity, finishing long with a toasted brioche echo.

South of Yountville, tucked alongside the foothills of the Mayacamas in the Oak Knoll District, our Hillview Estate benefits from the cooling breezes of the San Pablo Bay. We purchased the 44-acre site in 1982 in search of an excellent Merlot source to blend with our Cabernets. Napa Valley’s sub-appellations did not yet exist back then, so we had no concern about whether the property fell within Oakville limits; we simply sought out the best Merlot vineyard we could find.

In 1996, our second winemaker, Michael Weis, saw that the site’s micro-climate and diverse soil types were ideal for growing world-class Chardonnay, so we strategically replanted 26 acres to the variety, reserving approximately 12 acres of our finest Merlot vines.

Onward Wines, 2020 Chardonnay, Johnson Family Ranch, Mendocino - 1 Bottle

Onward Chardonnay is refreshing and captivating...I liken her to a ballerina she is full of electric tension and strength, yet graceful and light on her feet. She meets you with vibrant aromas of citrus and yellow plum, while a slight hint of straw dances in the background. On the palate, the wine is layered with rich flavors of nectarine, pink lady apple and white currant, with a touch of wet stone adding intrigue.

Onward Wines are single-vineyard, site-driven wines from vineyard sites that are very special to me. I am a true believer in personal connection and there is a story behind each vineyard site and how it came to be part of my portfolio. In these stories, you will learn more about the people behind these vineyards. I liken my connection to these vineyards to that of one’s favorite shirt or coffee mug or chair. Like a well-worn fabric or a slightly chipped mug that may have initially caught my eye for its beauty, but over the years has won my heart because it just feels right. When it comes to vineyards this happens too, because of a combination of my connection with the vines themselves and my connection with those that tend them. For me, the grower's hands are most definitely part of the terroir.

My style is about letting the vines speak. They are the art, I am the canvas, and my job is to give them a chance to share their beauty in each and every vintage. My decisions are driven by the vineyard and the vintage, my cellar practices are to uphold the truths I find in the vineyard. To this end, I pick early looking for a balance of flavors at lower ripeness, as I find this is when each vineyard is in its most unique expression of self.

Jarvis 2020 Chardonnay, Finch Hollow, Napa Valley - 1 Bottle

Named after the native finches that love feasting on our chardonnay grapes, the ‘Finch Hollow’ vineyard is now protected with bird netting during each growing season—so that we can keep the delicious fruit for ourselves. Founding winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff originally noted that the Finch Hollow vineyard’s unique terroir produced elegant, voluptuous wine. His discovery led us to produce this special Chardonnay using our best fruit every year.

We ferment our Chardonnay in new French oak barrels; it is then sur-lie aged for 12 months with weekly stirring. We choose the best barrels for the Finch Hollow, showcasing a full-bodied Chardonnay bursting with brioche and honeysuckle aromatics. The palate layers flavors of yellow peach and ripe melon with tropical fruit undertones; the textured mouthfeel gives way to a distinctive, lingering finish.

Jarvis wines are all produced from estate vineyards, located high above the city of Napa, in the beautifully rugged mountains between Mt. George and Milliken Canyon at the southeastern end of the Napa Valley. The vineyards are planted in gently sloping meadows one thousand feet above the valley floor. As the cool maritime air passes over the Carneros flats and begins flowing into the valley, it falls about seven degrees in temperature for the thousand feet of vertical rise. As such, our vineyards tend to be cooler by several degrees than the famous Carneros region! These cooler temperatures allow a long “hang time,” which permits a long, slow fruit maturation for maximum flavor and concentration at harvest.
