The Beginning
Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the original site of the Museum of Fine Arts, which was in Copley Square from 1876 until 1909 when the museum moved into its existing building on Huntington Avenue. Dozens of horse-drawn carts took the museum’s collection of thousands of pieces of art approximately one mile down the street to the new museum.
Long regarded as a Boston institution, The Copley Plaza was formally opened on August 19, 1912, about 16 months after construction of the building began. Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception for more than 1,000 guests, including local and national dignitaries, civic leaders, captains of industry, and stage and movie stars. So prestigious was The Copley Plaza’s opening that rooms had been booked 16 months in advance.
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is recognized as an innovator in the hotel industry. The hotel is known for these industry firsts: the first completely air-conditioned hotel in Boston, the first hotel with an international reservations system, the first hotel anywhere to accept credit cards, and the first to offer direct telephone dialing for guests.
During Prohibition, the Oak Bar was known as the Merry-Go-Round Bar, a lively gathering place. Patrons celebrated the end of Prohibition in 1933 at The Copley Plaza's famous Merry-Go-Round Bar, which featured a working merry-go-round. It remained a popular gathering place through the 1970s. Pieces of the Merry-Go-Round Track have been preserved in the floor of OAK Long Bar + Kitchen.
"The opening presented to Boston one of the most colorful and brilliant pictures the city has ever seen. It marked a new era in hotel-keeping, not only in Boston but in the entire country."
As one newspaper noted
During World War II, elevator operators had to be at least 65 years of age, releasing younger workers for war production activities.

I reserved three rooms 10 months in advance to celebrate my daughter´s graduation from Boston College. When I called I never mentioned a cheaper rate, I only said give me three great rooms. I happened to arrive late at night on the 18th of May and was so tired all I noticed was that the rooms seemed small and outdated....but went to sleep. When I opened my curtains the next morning I discovered that both of my rooms had the worst view ever and my curtains also happened to be torn. This is when I decided to call the front desk and ask for a room change. Thankfully we were changed to much bigger and nicer rooms after multiple conversations with the manager. I still feel though that Fairmont disregarded my reservation needs and had I not complained I would have come back with a horrible hotel room experience. I also feel that I wasted time and energy packing my belongings and moving rooms. Times and energy that I could have spent walking the streets of Boston or spending more time with my daughter.

Great service and experience
I felt like I was in the lap of old world luxury! Thank you for making my work trip so special. A rare treat!
Re: Room 521 Senior management, Carolina, Kayla, Amanda, General Manager, and staff, After waiting for the noted room dating back to May 17, my arrival date, and a switch in my room arrangement due to sudden unavailability early this morning, I discovered that the toilet is leaking water at the base after flushing. The situation is unsanitary, hazardous, frustrating, and "disappointing." In addition, the towel rack on the side of the left sink was not secured properly, the wall paper is peeling, and the bathroom counter is not secured to the wall. Needless to say, the above issues are not indicative of what the Fairmont stands for regarding professionalism and excellence in hotel operations. I am leaving for the day. Please make the required repairs WITH SPEED, and confirm via text message that the repairs have been made prior to my return to the hotel. John Y. PS / Despite the inconvenience caused by the above, you and the staff of the Fairmont Copley are OUTSTANDING. I sincerely appreciate your efforts to assist and to support my stay. Thank you.

We really appreciated it when we got early check-in as we were exhausted coming from an entirely different world time zone. The lobby was fantastic, Cory the dog was very friendly. However, when we got into the room we were disappointed; no amenities, no fridge, carpet needed to be stretched, tattered furnitures - in short, room needed to maintained and cleaned. I went down to explain and was met by Ms Rav, who was very efficient and later, we moved to a better room. Food was good, mainly we ordered via room service. Food order was inconsistent though - 1 day: we could order breakfast via phone during the previous night, next, we got the breakfast menu knob, which we duly hang it on the door before 2 am.. then we got no door knob menu, so we called to order and was told to hang the breakfast menu. We did not have it, so they sent the menu under the door around midnight😳. Wasn’t it easier to receive our order via phone rather making us wait for a menu order form, hang it and have someone around to check the door knob menu. In cleaning the room, in general good. A small incident: once we asked a room attendant to clean around 2 pm, but was told that she finished her shift at 2pm. So , we told her to come back at 1 pm. Overall the staff were friendly and efficient. I would like to thank Ms Rav and her team for sending complimentary cheese platter for my nephew’s 17th birthday.

The service was nice but the hotel is overdue for a refurnishing. The rooms feel old and from a different century. I would stay at a more modern hotel next time.
Room size was nice, but the room had a really strange and unpleasant odor
My recent stay at the Fairmont Copley in Boston was a mixed bag. While the hotel undeniably possesses a grand, palatial air – a testament to its history and legacy of old-world wealth – some aspects felt in need of modernization. Upon entering the lobby, I was struck by the opulent atmosphere. Soaring ceilings, intricate details, and attentive staff created an undeniable sense of arrival. However, this grandeur didn't quite translate to my room. While comfortable, it felt on the smaller side, and lacked a few modern conveniences – a mini-fridge for example. The bathroom, though clean, suffered from a lack of counter space, making toiletries a bit of a juggling act. Given the hotel's historic reputation, I had anticipated a more comprehensively updated experience. While the classic charm holds value, some modern amenities would have elevated the overall stay. The food served during the company leadership event was, unfortunately, a bit of a letdown. It lacked flavor and innovation, failing to live up to the standards one might expect from such a prestigious hotel. Despite these shortcomings, the staff at the Fairmont Copley deserves high praise. The front desk team, bellhops, and general lobby staff were all consistently courteous, professional, and accommodating. Their attentiveness went a long way in making my stay more pleasant.
