#158: Storytellers

Thursday, May 30th, 8:00pm at Barrel O’ Fun and on Twitch

Nerd Nite is always about telling a story of one sort or another. This month, we have three speakers telling stories about storytelling!

“I Can’t Believe It’s Not Le Guin! or Creating the Stories You Want to Tell Irrespective of Genre” by Sarah Abraham

This talk examines the journey and consequences of writing exactly what you want to write without any concern for audience or genre (while kind of hoping other people like it too). I will also discuss my process, including how I develop worlds, characters, and narratives, and the things I find essential for slogging through this long and often thankless process.

Under her birth name, Sarah Abraham generally engages with the world as a productive member of society teaching computer science, but she is always happy to slither into a hole to create original fiction and art under the pen name, G.M. Gray.

“Live Storytelling in Austin: What, Where, and Why?” by Mike Mournighan

We’ll talk about what Live Storytelling is (plus what it is not), what the Austin scene looks like, and how it relates to popular podcast, The Moth Podcast. Austin is home to many live shows and a theatre teaching storytelling, we’ll show you how to get involved.

Mike Mournighan is a long time improviser with ComedySportz, a storyteller, and a comedy+video game streamer online via DemoDuo (www.Demoduo.tv). He picked up the arts habit later in life and enjoys making up for lost time.

“Drinking With The Saints” by Bill Frisbie

Drinking With The Saints is a monthly, storytelling salon that mixes ‘spirits’ with the Spirit World. Here, the recipe for brewing deeper connections (with perfect strangers & imperfect friends) is a safe space, true tales, finger foods, and an ice cold glass of…something.

Bill Frisbie has lived in Austin for so long that he remember when Hiway 183 got its first traffic light. He is co-host of Drinking With The Saints, and has told (mostly-true) stories at various local venues, including Testify Austin and Hyde Park Theatre.

We have a new venue!
