welcome to the 50th Ward

The most diverse and wonderful community in the City of Chicago.

Meet Alderman Debra Silverstein

Hello to all my friends and neighbors in the 50th Ward. I am always available and happy to help with any city needs. I hope to hear from you soon!

A Message from Alderman Silverstein

“The 50th Ward is the most diverse and wonderful neighborhood in the City of Chicago. There is nowhere else where you can visit an Indian restaurant, a Kosher bakery, and a Muslim bookstore all within a few blocks. If you live here, you know how great it is. If you don’t, come on up and see what the 50th Ward has to offer!”

Thank you to everyone who logged on to the 50th Ward webinar yesterday. We were joined by police officers from the Civil Rights Unit and the Bureau of Detectives, as well as the leadership of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations. We discussed CHI vs Hate, the innovative new legislation I passed which helps Chicago report and track hate crimes and non-criminal hate incidents that may lead to violence. If you missed the meeting, please click the video to learn how to report discrimination, hate, and bias incidents in Chicago and hear from the experts about how your 911 or 311 call goes from report to action. ... I was honored to participate in the grand opening of FORA - Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America’s new empowerment center at the old library building on California. FORA provides tutoring services to refugee children, helping them become academically and economically self-sufficient. They serve dozens of children with a dedicated staff of volunteer tutors. They are a very valued part of the 50th Ward and it is a privilege to see them expand and grow in their vital work! ... See MoreSee Less

Hateful flyers were posted on the 50th Ward Office window yesterday relating to the war between Israel and Hamas. As the only Jewish alderman on the Chicago City Council, and the representative of the largest Orthodox Jewish community in the City of Chicago, it is clear that these flyers are a direct attack on my religious identity and my belief in the right of the Jewish people to self-determination in their ancestral homeland. This is the same hate that has targeted other Jewish elected officials, both locally and across the nation, and it must stop now.

Free speech is the hallmark of our democracy, but when that expression crosses the line into hate, we must speak out. Since the October 7 terrorist attack, Jews have been increasingly targeted on our streets, in our schools, and on social media. No one should ever be victimized based on their religious identity. It is time for our leaders in Chicago to speak out loudly and clearly that antisemitism will not be tolerated and hate has no home in our city.

The police are reviewing footage from my office, and I urge them to thoroughly investigate this incident and all other cases of antisemitism and hate.

Grateful to my friends from the Chicago Jewish Alliance for stopping by the 50th Ward Office today! CJA is a grassroots organization that advocates for Chicago's Jewish community and stands up to antisemitism on a local and citywide level. It was especially meaningful to see the dozens of heartfelt letters they brought from Chicago residents who are fed up with bigotry and hate. Please know that I stand with you! ... See MoreSee Less
