Item Description
Take home a beautiful framed photo of John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, taken by photographer John W. Corbett at the Newport Jazz Festival. For over two decades, John Corbett has been Newport's photographer of choice for portraits, corporate clients, weddings, and events offered by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Twice voted best photographer by the readers of Newport Life Magazine, John has also been honored with the Preservation Society of Newport County's Laurel Award in recognition of his skill and inspired photography, which for over 20 years has documented and personified the society for the world at large.
Dizzy is best known for his influence in the jazz community as a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader. Born in 1917, Dizzy was introduced to music at an early age by his father. From there, he taught himself how to play trumpet and trombone which fueled his passion for studying music academically. Dizzy went on to perform with well known musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Earl Hines, Cab Calloway, and even Duke Ellington.
