Who is the U.S. Lighthouse Society?

The U.S. Lighthouse Society is a non-profit historical and educational organization incorporated to educate, inform, and entertain those who are interested in lighthouses, past and present.

The Society has been the proud recipient of numerous preservation awards, and for the past 29 years has supported lighthouse restoration projects worldwide, with a combined cash total of unrestricted awards now approaching one million U.S. dollars.

With the first issue published in 1984, the U.S. Lighthouse Society has made a significant contribution to lighthouse education through our quarterly magazine  “The Keeper’s Log.”  With members spanning the globe, “The Keeper’s Log” has become an important addition to many reference libraries for those interested in the history of lighthouses, optics and architecture.

The Society also organizes lighthouse tours annually, domestic and international.  These educational excursions allow Society members to learn about lighthouses on a global scale in order to gain a better understanding of the subject.  They are also a lot of fun!

Although the almost 300-year-old era of manned light stations in this country has come to a close, those remaining symbols of our maritime heritage can, and should be, preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. With this in mind, the U.S. Lighthouse Society was founded to assist in the restoration and preservation of America's lighthouses, and to help qualified local groups in their efforts to return the nation's lighthouses to the public domain.
