When the 2009 Michigan Football season kicked off, so did the 2009 Bernard "Pat" Maloy Scholarship "Season for a Reason" Online Auction.

Bid high and bid often to win a piece of Michigan's past and to help the students who are its future.

We are auctioning off a number of fun and unique items to bid on to raise money for the Maloy Scholarship which is awarded to incoming U-M Kinesiology freshmen who have been touched by cancer, either themselves or an immediate family member. A diagnosis of cancer impacts the whole family. Cancer patients and their families must accept the diagnosis, suffer through difficult treatments, and face an uncertain future. From the day of diagnosis, no family member's life is quite the same. For young adults going off to college, a diagnosis of cancer for either themselves or a family member is especially emotionally traumatic. Besides the psychological concern, new college students may likely deal with the physical side effects of treatment and be unable to earn funds for tuition and expenses. The more items we have the more money we can raise, so we're asking for your help.

Who Was Pat Maloy?

Bernard Patrick, "Pat," Maloy, died Nov. 28 2001 with his family at his bedside after a courageous battle with cancer. In 1986, he became assistant professor at U of M Kinesiology, Department of Sports Management and Communication. In 1993, he was promoted to associate professor, teaching courses in the legal aspects of sport and facility management. Pat loved teaching and promoted excellence in analytic and writing skills. He was known as a strong, caring professor, who challenged his students and took great care in evaluating their work. According to Maloy, the students were more challenging than any jury he ever faced. Pat began his career with a law practice in North Judson, Ind., but he returned to graduate school several years later to study sports administration. Upon graduation, he took a corporate management job with MDS Qantel, a computer company specializing in dealings with teams in the National Football League, National Basketball Association and several universities.

Please note: This fund constitutes a gift for endowment, and distributions will be made in accordance with the University's then existing endowment distribution policy. Any surplus distributions from the Fund during any period may be accumulated for later use for the above purposes or may be added to the principal of the fund at the University's discretion.

Artists Spotlight... WARREN ZINN

This year we've been blessed by several artists and photographers who have agreed to donate their work to the Maloy Scholarship Auction. This month we spotlight the work of Warren Zinn.

Warren Zinn, a 1998 graduate of the University of Michigan, and Michigan Daily photographer during the 1997 National Championship season, also interned with the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and the Miami Herald. After college, became a photographer with Army Times Publishing Co. While employed at Army Times, Zinn covered events all over the world, from uncovering stories about trafficked sex slaves in South Korean to being one of the few people who was at both the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. He then completed two trips to Afghanistan spending more than 100 days with the troops on the front lines along with the 3rd Infantry.
