UNM/NMHBA Summer Law Camp

The annualsummer law camp program provides youth from across the state an opportunity to learn about and experience aspects of the legal profession.  During the five day summer residence program
seventh and eighth grade students from across the state get a taste of college life and are introduced to New Mexico's legal system.  Students meet with judges and attorneys, visit both the Federal and State District Courthouses and obtain what is often their first introduction to a lawyer, a judge, a law office, or a courtroom.  Students of all backgrounds participate at no cost to students or their parents. The camp’s admission process is highly competitive and merit-based, but also ensures geographic diversity by selecting students from across New Mexico. Camp alumni include some of the most academically talented and motivated youth in the State.

High School Mentorship Program

We recognize that educational interest must be developed early.  At the high school level, the NMHBA has partnered with the law academy at the Atrisco Heritage Academy High School in Albuquerque’s South Valley.  NMHBA members host mentorship events and prepare lessons for students relating to law and community issues. This program is aimed at improving academic skills, nurturing interest in the legal profession, and demonstrating that higher education is attainable by all.  Through the program, students are asked to analyze broad issues and consider the potential legal implications. The NMHBA also supports parents through Law
Day events aimed at educating parents about methods and resources available to them in helping their children succeed in college. This year, the NMHBA hopes to expand the program beyond Atrisco Heritage Academy by partnering with schools across the state.

UNM School of Law Mentorship/Scholarship Program

For many, theopportunity to attend law school or to attain higher education is a lifelong dream.  But it’s very expensive.  A student’s socioeconomic background can present a major obstacle to attainment of higher education, and in New Mexico this is often the case. Students generally incur bar exam costs in excess of $3,000.00 during a time where working may not be a realistic options given the demands of bar prep. The NMHBA strives to provide substantive
scholarships to deserving law students, constrained only by the availability of funds. Because of the economic downturn,
the number of students needing bar scholarships has drastically increased over the years. 2013 is not expected to be an exception.

Through the mentorship program, students are afforded an opportunity to network and develop relationships with practicing attorneys. By creating these opportunities, law students
will develop career long mentors and be afforded apprentice type opportunities which will ultimately result in high quality legal services for the people of New Mexico.
