Tipitina's Foundation has four Music Office Co-Ops statewide, New Orleans was the first. The home of many great musicians, many struggling to make a living, the story of this particular Co-op is an inspiring one.
Opened officially in early 2004, the Co-Op was housed on the ground floor of a building on Tulane Ave in the Mid-City section of New Orleans. A little over a year and a half later, the area took on 4-8 feet of water after Katrina had passed and the Federal levees failed. The founders/owners and staff of Tipitina's/Tipitina's Foundation couldn't let the musicians down and soon set up shop above the Tipitina's music venue at 501 Napoleon Ave, which sustained little damage and took on no water.
It was there that the Co-Op served as a crossroads, a meeting place, and a place for artistic salvation. Mark Fowler, who is still the Co-Op Manager to this day, remembers exactly how meaningful and necessary that effort was to the music of the Crescent City. The Co-Op functioned as a virtual message board for displaced musicians seeking a way home and a way back to making music. Computers connected people to family members and resources, instruments were given out (pictured, Susan Cowsill & Russ Broussard get new instruments), and information and assistance was provided to anyone that needed it.
Now, over seven years from the start, six from The Storm, the New Orleans Music Office Co-Op, as well as our three others, is still providing many of these same services. We also offer legal help, a small recording studio, and web and design services. We at Tipitina's Foundation are dedicated to keeping this vital service alive in this city that lives and breathes music. But we need your help. Our computers are outdated, some nearly eight years old, and our equipment is showing the signs of wear and tear from the passing years. We hope that you will help us help the hard-working musicians of New Orleans, of Louisiana, and keep music alive and a viable means of making a living down here on the Third Coast.
