About us:

Community Change, Inc. (CCI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote racial justice and equity by challenging systemic racism and acting as a catalyst for anti-racist learning and action.

CCI makes visible and challenges the historical and ongoing role racism plays in the institutions that shape all of our lives. We focus particularly on involving white people in understanding and confronting systemic racism and white privilege. We understand racism as a system that impacts every area of life in the United States from education to law, from housing to transportation, from employment to media, from religion to artistic expression.

Our Programs

  • Civil Rights Internship: Each year, 15-20 CCI student interns work, learn, and build critical skills in anti racist organizing and nonprofit management. We have had nearly 200 participants since the programs founding. The intern experience is powerful, resulting in a dedication to anti-racism goals in their chosen fields and personal lives. We created and staff Boston's Anti-Racist's My Knapsack Is Not Invisible meet-up group, with 254 members, where Boston-area community members can come together to discuss, learn and socialize with other local people concerned about racial justice.
  • Organizing for Equity: CCI supports and engages with multi-racial groups taking action. 2012 and 2013 work includes: CORI Reform, the School-to-Prison Pipeline, The Three Strikes Legislation and supporting immigrant rights.
  • Antiracist Education and Organizational Development: CCI trains leaders who can influence policy, hiring, and organizing and apply anti-racism strategies to diverse institutions, fields, and communities. Last year, we engaged over 600 people in 12 institutions and, indirectly, their circles of influence.
  • Yvonne Pappenheim Library on Anti-racism: A public lending library, the Yvonne Pappenheim Library on Anti-Racism, with more than 3,000 volumes, we have amassed an unparalleled body of print and multimedia information on race, racism, and anti-racism work. Our website contains hundreds of resources and receives more than 1,500 hits per month. Additionally CCI, itself is a resource. Everyday we receive multiple phone calls and visits from community members looking for resources and guidance regarding civil rights issues.
  • Forums & Events for Analysis and Action: educational, action-oriented forums and events focused on current issues related to systemic racism. Examples: "Are We Allowed to Talk About Obama and Race?" with the Suffolk University School of Law; “They Want Their Country Back: Racism and the Politics of White Resentment” with Tim Wise; "The Education of a White Parent-Wrestling with Race and Opportunity in the Boston Public Schools" with Susan Naimark; "What to the Slave is the 4th of July?" Reading Frederick Douglass in the Era of Barack Obama – an annual community event on the Boston Common and throughout Massachusetts.
