Our 3rd annual Mission event, ‘Mission 2015: Raising for Julie’ will be held on Monday, April 20th, 2015 at 7pm at Jackson’s Bistro in Tampa, FL.

The Teal Recovery Project is a nonprofit organization that raises awareness through educating, connecting, and empowering women who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Each year, The Teal Recovery Project raises and donates to a specially selected woman that has been affected by this disease.

Donations from this event will benefit our 2015 recipient, Julie Skarr.

Julie’s battle with cervical cancer first began in December of 2010. Following some abnormal results during a routine annual exam with her GYN, Julie underwent a cone biopsy procedure to remove high-risk “pre-cancer cells”. She received a series of clear gynecological exams over the next two years through late 2013 when her Tri- Care insurance benefits ended. Because she was now uninsured and unable to pay out-of-pocket, Julie was seen by a different GYN at the Sarasota Health Department. Upon that exam, the GYN stated that he felt Julie presented symptoms of cervical cancer and immediately referred her to an outside facility to perform a surgical laparoscopy & multiple cervical biopsies. Pathology was sent to Johns Hopkins for review.

In May of 2014 following a documented medical misdiagnosis from 2010, Julie was officially diagnosed with stage 2b adenocarcinoma. Because of the size of her tumor, Julie was not a candidate for a standard treatment plan (hysterectomy). Instead, she received a series of brachytherapy treatments, external pelvic radiation, and concurrent chemotherapy from July of 2014 to September of 2014. During this time, her father lost a long fought battle of his own with Diabetes.

As of January of 2015, Julie’s tumor has shrunk significantly, but her journey continues. She is currently receiving weekly B12 injections, along with several other methods of palliative care at Moffitt Cancer Center. On March 17th she received a follow-up scan to determine the next step in her treatment. Because the cancer has spread to other areas of her body, Julie is seeking additional medical opinions to determine the best plan for care moving forward.

Since her battle with cervical cancer began in May of 2014, Julie has been on unpaid leave from her current employer. The financial support she will receive from The Teal Recovery Project will go directly to the mounting medical bills and living expenses she has incurred during this difficult time.
