Ocean Matters was created to address pressing environmental challenges facing the seas. Major fisheries are in danger of collapsing; coastal habitat destruction threatens drinking water; dead zones are on the rise; coral reef, mangroves, and other fish nurseries are showing unprecedented declines; and the Great Pacific garbage is concentrating dangerous chemicals in our food chain. Yet, the ocean suffers from the tragedy of the commons: no one nation owns the oceans and it lacks a coordinated conservation effort.
The ocean's health impacts each and every one of us. Every second breath you take is produced in the ocean. Our weather is created by it. Fish supply the greatest percentage of protein consumed by the world's population. Our shorelines help to filtrate our fresh water drinking supply. A quarter of the carbon dioxide produced by humans is kept out of the atmosphere by being absorbed into the ocean.
Here at Ocean Matters we believe that our young people are our best resource in helping to solve the problems facing the sea. We empower young people to see that their actions can and do make a difference—both at home and abroad—through projects on threatened marine habitats where the necessity and positive impact of their work is visible.
You can make a difference, too! Help fund a deserving student to attend an Ocean Matters program. Scholarships are given to the most promising students who also demonstrate financial need.
