About the Chance

The Chance is the resident theater company of Anaheim, a group of artists who have been telling stories for seventeen years.  We produce socially conscious, intimate theater experiences that have been recognized numerous times by LA Stage Alliance, LA Drama Critics Circle, Back Stage, GLAAD Media Awards, OC Weekly, Arts Orange County, and more. We have also been invited to remount our productions at South Coast Repertory, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, The Getty Museum, among others. We are proud to have produced 34 world premieres, and 41 regional premieres as part of our subscription seasons of 17 years. We are also thrilled to be in our fifth season of our On the Radar resident playwright series.

Our Vision

We believe that theater is like a gym for empathy.  It’s where we can go to build up the muscles of compassion, to practice listening, understanding and engaging with people that are not just like ourselves.

The media we call social are often anything but; we have hundreds of “friends” and yet some of us feel lonelier than ever.  Technology connects us globally but can sometimes keep us from connecting with our neighbors.

Tight budgets have reduced or eliminated arts funding in many schools, despite studies showing a strong correlation between arts involvement and academic achievement, and despite the fact that creativity is one of the top five skills business leaders look for in new employees.

Chance Theater believes that live theater contributes to a more compassionate, connected, and creative community.

Our programs

Annual Subscription Series - For 17 seasons the Chance has staged six provocative and intimate productins of new and reimagined plays and musicals within its annual season. In order to embrace and celebrate the uniqueness of live theater, we always aim to "think outside the proscenium" and transform our black box performance spaces for every production in order to connect our audiences to the artists and to the work in new and exciting ways.

Theatre for Young Audience Series - With the opening of our 2nd stage in 2015 we have expanded our educational programming to include a Theatre for Young Audience series. The TYA series provides a gateway for families to enjoy their first theatrical experience together. We also introduced Relaxed Performances within the series to further continue our goal to give all families an opportunity to enjoy live theatre together.

On the Radar Series and Resident Playwright Program - In support of our commitment to develop new works, On the Radar is a series of readings and workshops of the newest and freshest voices in the American Theatre. The resident playwright is featured in three of the readings per season.

Speak Up - Take a CHANCE educational outreach program - For nine years, at-risk junior high and high school students from Anaheim have the opportunity to participate in a 5 1/2 week summer theatre workshop, completely free-of-charge, where they are given the freedom to think creatively and craft a piece of theater entirely of their own stories and imagination and ‘Speak Up’ on issues that are important to them.
