An older student just recently shared a timeless question...
Seeking the answer to the timeless question “what do you want to be when you grow up?” turned out to be more challenging than anticipated. I have spent the past 4 years trying new careers, doing varying volunteer work and striving for differing degrees in the hopes that I would I find the answer. I wanted to find the career that inspired me, one that I felt passionate about and that incorporated my values and aspirations for my future. After a time of searching, I came across social work. I learned that social work is foundational to social change and justice. It is a form of service that one can provide to others to make a positive difference on our community and those we serve. Throughout my search there had always been one common trait in my work, my desire to help others like others have helped me, the drive to pay it forward. I want to advocate for and educate people who want to learn and make a change, and to provide support to those who are not ready to make that step. I understand that life has challenges and therefore I want to provide nonjudgmental and empathetic service to others. Through my education in social work I have learned the importance of empathy and the need for genuine and well prepared social workers in our community, and in our state of New Mexico. I whole-heartedly believe this is what I want for my career and I purposefully intend to finish my Bachelor’s degree in social work and pursue my masters to get licensed as a LMSW. I want to stay in New Mexico and do my work here. I have a long-term goal of getting my PhD in Psychology and do research on education in New Mexico. Thankfully, I no longer must ask myself what I want to be when I grow up, because I have always known that I want to help people, and I have found the path to make that my career.
