2020 Honoree Todd Delmay

Todd Delmay grew up in Fremont, Michigan where he fell in love with the arts and found refuge and friendship in both music and theatre. But it was his love of theatre that was nurtured by an influential high school English teacher that inspired him to attend Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where he majored in Theatre with an emphasis on Acting and Directing. He also studied Dance and German, which all lead him to move to Germany after graduation to work as an actor with a theatre in Berlin.

Upon returning to the US, Todd landed a job in tourism with America’s number one deluxe tour operator and led sightseeing tours in New England, French Canada and the Hawaiian Islands; an experience he describes as delivering a very, very long monologue with audience participation.

Todd moved to Florida in 1996 and worked for a marketing company representing destinations and attractions in Germany, including the Theatre Neuschwanstein. In 2001, Todd went into business for himself by acquiring a local travel agency and a small school tour company. The agency began working with large citywide events like boat shows, music festivals and tradeshows by booking hotel reservations for exhibitors and attendees. The work required the development of a proprietary online hotel reservations system that event organizers could use for promoting hotel stays, and eventually event registration and ticketing were added as features to the system. Today, Delmay Corporation is licensing its system to other companies such as show/event organizers and membership associations.

In addition to his own business, Todd joined BNI (Business Network International) Broward in 2002, and his leadership roles eventually lead him to become Broward Area Director for a number of years, during which he started new chapters, including two in Hollywood, and also taught the organization’s Member Success Program, and developed his own business education courses around storytelling and performance.

In 2011, he joined other leading business authors to co-author the bestselling book Building The Ultimate Network. Todd continued his work as a public speaker and business coach teaching entrepreneurs how to develop successful stories about their business that sell by using the right language specific to the individual and company.

In 2014, Todd’s personal life became the subject of a legal battle in Florida for the right of same sex couples to marry when he and his now-husband Jeff joined five other couples and Equality Florida in suing the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts. In January 2014, they announced their suit, the first of its kind in Florida, which resulted in a Miami judge ruling the 2008 ban on same sex marriage unconstitutional, although the ruling was stayed until further appeal. Another case was later filed in the Federal Courts, which also resulted in overturning the Florida ban, with a stay that was set to expire on January 6th, 2015. However, the day before, the case including the Delmay’s was granted another hearing by its judge to address the apparent conflict between the State’s stay and the Federal Order. At the hearing, the judge lifted her stay, effective immediately, giving Miami-Dade a half-day jump start on marriage equality. Todd and Jeff, along with another couple from the case, raced to the Marriage License Bureau and then back to the judge’s chambers to be married by the same judge. With a throng of reporters and cameras surrounding them, they became the first ever to marry in Florida in a joint ceremony that was covered on live television in Florida and around the nation. As the first ever married same sex couple from Hollywood, they were then guests of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz at the 2015 State of the Union Address.

Besides the legal fight for marriage equality, Todd and Jeff have been involved in several other Political and Civil Rights Organizations and serving on some of their boards and committees. Todd is the President of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council, which has recently made important strides in the City of Hollywood around diversity and inclusion by elevating the voices, perspectives and presence of LGBTQ+ people in Hollywood and increasing the City’s Equality Index. Todd is also a board member of the Downtown Hollywood Business Association and the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the City of Hollywood’s Sustainability Advisory Committee and Legislative sub-committee.

Todd and Jeff are the proud parents of Blake Delmay, whom they adopted from birth in 2010 despite the barriers they faced with the then-ban on gay people being allowed to adopt. Todd feels it is important that we all think about how we can make the world more equal, diverse and inclusive for future generations, and to support self-expression through the Arts. Our lives and the lives of our children depend on how we learn to accept one another as we are, and to express our true selves in order to resolve our differences through relationships and dialogue.
