FUND THE FUTURE BENEFIT - January 15, 2020

ABOUT ALPS:

Action Leadership Program for Students (ALPS) Mission is to provide Training for Today’s High School Students and Tomorrow’s Leaders created by members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco.

The Action Leadership Program for Students (ALPS) Phase 1 was completed November 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019. Phase 2 continues to build on the success and interest in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and the opportunity for Rotary to become a premier catalyst and provider of youth leadership development at the high school level for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in San Francisco and Rotary District 5150.

Leveraging the existing base of interest and engagement by youth in Interact Clubs, civic and community leadership can become a focal point of their Club activities and learning.

After interviewing scores of students in 2018-2019 and assessing their interest and willingness to engage in ongoing leadership development, and through the generous funding from the San Francisco Rotary Foundation of $100,000, we are moving forward with ALPS Phase 2, which began in September with five Interact Clubs at Lincoln and George Washington in San Francisco, the Redwood Club in Marin County, and the South San Francisco Club in San Mateo County.  In addition, ALPS is also being piloted with the Girls Hope, Boys Hope program in San Francisco.

The overall leadership framework is based on The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership as derived from the work of Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner in their best-selling book The Leadership Challenge, with over 2 million copies sold worldwide.

The leadership sessions will occur weekly for one hour using action learning approaches. The students interviewed made it clear they were not interested in another ‘classroom' lecture with books to read.

The action learning approach has been used at RYLA in the past, and was tested even further at RYLA 2019, with great success. Faculty for the program employs existing teachers already embedded in the schools who are receiving training in The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership and the curriculum activities. The first semester focuses solely on activities related to The Five Practices, and the second semester focuses on applying those practices to real-life issues the students want to work on.

Students conduct research, meet with politicians and government agencies, nonprofits, and businesses to more fully understand an issue, and ultimately come to conclusions about how the issues might be addressed.  Rotarians are included based on specific project needs expressed by the students.

The learning activities will be integrated into the Fall and Spring Interact Conferences, the District Assembly, and the annual District Conference.

The Action Leadership Program for Students is led by a paid professional working 30 hours a week to establish the overall vision for the Program, screen and hire the faculty, help with student recruitment and Interact Club engagement, create online networks for students to remain in touch, partner with the School Districts involved, integrate the content into all District-wide conferences for youth and adults, streamline the organization of RYLA, and more.
