Item Description

Zen Kine, 2008,
Acrylic on canvas,
36 x 96 inches;
Courtesy of the artist and Peter Blake Gallery, Laguna Beach;

A native of Orange County, Jimi Gleason has spent the last 20 years carving out a distinctive career in painting. His lush, luxurious compositions have become highly sought-after pieces among local collectors. To achieve his unique effects, Gleason meticulously drags gossamer layers of pearlescent acrylic paint down and across his canvases with a squeegee or other artist tool, as seen here in Zen Kine (2008). Nearing the edges, he allows the paint to pool or smear, creating an emulsive effect that grounds the painting in physical space. Each piece has momentum and is in a constant state of flux. The effect is enigmatic, ethereal, and emotionally resonant. Gleason was the former studio assistant to Ed Moses, a central figure in the Los Angeles contemporary art scene.
