Item Description
Erika deVries, Beloved, 2017, Neon, 10 mm neon tubes, (clear red), transformers, mounted to dead frame, 6 1/2 × 30 × 1/2 in, 16.5 × 76.2 × 1.3 cm - Erika deVries is a performance, photo and video based artist, whose work investigates the realities of girlhood, womanhood and motherhood, and it’s cycles of absence and presence. DeVries has created a special edition for CMA. Based on the concept of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Beloved Community,” deVries has been working on a project that encourages recognition and empathy for poverty, hunger and homelessness. By collecting handwritten transcriptions of the word “beloved,” deVries hopes to replace racism and discrimination with an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. The Beloved for CMA’s edition was written by Erika's son Zane. This work is an edition of ten - please contact CMA if you are interested in purchasing another edition of the work. Signature: COA will be provided
