Item Description

In 1892, Rudyard Kipling and his new American bride bought 12 acres of land in Dummerston while on their around-the-world honeymoon.  By years end they had started construction of their dream home which overlooked the Connecticut River Valley.  Christened Naulakha, a Hindi word meaning “jewel beyond price,” this home was designed by Rudyard to resemble a ship with his study in the prow.  Here Kipling wrote the Jungle Booksand Captains Courageousand began Kim and the Just So Stories.
 
This National Historic Landmark has been restored after years of neglect and is now available for vacation rentals.  It was restored in 1991 by The Landmark Trust USA, a non-profit organization committed to historic preservation.
