Item Description

This hand-drawn illustration by Alan Ohashi is based on photos of East First Street taken by Ohashi and Bob Nakamura, both of Visual Communications (VC), the first Asian Pacific American media organization in the United States. It was part of a set of educational materials titled Asian American People and Places that VC produced in 1972.

East First Street has been considered the historic heart of Little Tokyo in Los Angeles for over 100 years. In 1995, the north side of East First Street, a portion of which is depicted here, was named a National Historic Landmark.
