Item Description
Join Dai Bosatsu in New York state for their Introduction to Zen Weekend program, a unique opportunity to experience Rinzai Zen Buddhist practice in a monastic environment. The successful bidder will be able to choose from the following 2020 dates: April 24-26, September 11 -13, and November 20 - 22.
The program begins with an orientation late Friday afternoon. Throughout the weekend we focus intensively on the central elements of Zen practice–zazen (seated meditation with attention to posture and breath), chanting, jihatsu (traditional bowls used in silent, formal meals), and work practice. Abbot Shinge Roshi, Dharma Heir Dokuro Osho, or a senior student will give a Dharma talk Saturday night and will meet with participants for a question-and-answer period. The weekend concludes on Sunday with an informal lunch and discussion. Bus transportation from New York Zendo may be available. For more information on what to expect, see PDF.
Accommodations are clean and simple. Each room has a futon bed, table, lamp and closet. Bedding and towels are provided. There is a shared bathroom and shower room down the hall. Most rooms are singles; some are shared by two to four people.
The Zen Studies Society is a Buddhist community dedicated to realizing and actualizing our true nature. Cultivating an atmosphere of respect, harmony, deep insight, and boundless compassion, we offer the simple yet profound teachings and practice of Zen Buddhism at our mountain monastery and our city temple under the auspices of ZSS. The Zen Studies Society was established in 1956 to support the Buddhist scholar D.T. Suzuki in his efforts to introduce Zen to the West, and is one of the oldest Zen Buddhist organizations in the United States.
