Item Description

Wood

21.5" x 22" x 29.5"

Philip Gruppuso was introduced to woodworking when he got married. His father-in-law, an antique restorer, said, "You need bookcases? Come to my shop." and Philip was hooked. His work is relatively simple, focusing on hand-crafted joinery and the wood's character. When Philip semi-retired in 2013, he started Seekonk Woodworking as a way to share his work with others. All of his pieces are one-of-a-kind and most are of his own design.

This table is a juxtaposed maple slab with a rectilinear torsion box (a hollow box with an interior structure that provides strength and stability) veneered in curly maple and ebonized anigre. In designing the base, the artist's goal was to keep it simple and avoid distraction. The design of the black walnut base is inspired by the work of the 20th century furniture designer and maker, George Nakashima. The top is finished with a durable combination of shellac and varnish.
