Artist Statement:

Thyra Rutter- Artist & Founder, Arte for Elephants

All of my work is intimate. I approach my subjects (the elephants) with care and respect. It is my job to capture their personalities, their inner most thoughts, emotions, their situation. These are not “motifs” or decorative elephants, they are individuals who would be recognized by their rescuers and caregivers.

I use color as a way of illustrating that individuals’ emotional state, their joy, humor, relaxation, or their boredom, sadness and longing to be free.

Arte for Elephant's mission is to educate the public on issues related to captive elephant welfare; to expose the cruelty behind elephant riding/”painting”/circuses/zoos.

Arte for Elephants strives to be sustainable, using recycled materials whenever possible. Thank you for loving elephants!

To date Arte for Elephants has raised nearly $40,000 for elephant sanctuaries around the world. www.arteforelephants.net/
