Item Description

The Dotar is a simple instrument with two strings. It is traditionally used by singers as an accompaniment to their devotional chants. The open strings are plucked in rhythm with the singing and are either both tuned to the tonic or to the tonic and another fitting note. This creates a supporting drone sound for the singing and gives rhythmic passages a nice groove. The size is 45” long and the head is 16” across.

This beautiful instrument was donated by Vamadeva a Crestone devotee who has been playing kirtan for many years and often leads kirtan here at the Ashram. This dotar has been played and blessed here in the Crestone temple during our fall Navratri celebration on Saraswati’s day (Goddess of Knowledge, The Arts, and Music).
