Item Description

Meet via Zoom for 40-minutes with William about his book, "The Sunflower Forest: Ecological Restoration and the New Communion with Nature".

As the title indicates, William Jordan III's book, "The Sunflower Forest: Ecological Restoration and the New Communion with Nature", offers an in-depth reflection on the value of restoration, not only as essential for the perpetuation of natural (or "classic") ecosystems, but as a context for negotiating the relationship between humans and the natural environment, and ultimately--and crucially--as performance, a context for creating and celebrating the values of deference and love of nature on which the future of "natural" ecosystems ultimately depends. Placing restoration in the context of environmental thinking generally, Jordan contrasts John Muir's commitment to literal wilderness with Henry Thoreau's account of his experience at Walden Pond, a make-believe wilderness not far from Boston, which has nevertheless (or maybe for this very reason) been described as the classic account of wilderness experience in America.
