Item Description
A good-sized older tuxedo boy was abandoned behind some apartment buildings several years ago. He had managed to survive thanks to those who were feeding him on occasion. He later discovered a feeding station set up out in the woods for several abandoned cats. He tried to eat there but was repeatedly chased away by the others and was an outsider in this small colony.
Never neutered, he would wander, and one day showed up limping badly, and not putting any weight on one of his front paws. A wonderful local rescuer and trapper heard about him, successfully trapped him, and brought him to a vet. After an x-ray and exam, it turned out his leg was broken in three places, and he would need strict cage rest and continued pain meds to help him stay comfortable.
His badly infected ears were also treated and he was neutered. He needed several days at the vet for observation. She thought he would need an amputation, but after strict cage rest and pain medication for two months, his bones started to slowly heal and the prognosis was better for keeping his leg. Several x-rays, boarding, neutering, and medicine added up to quite the bill.
The Captain Courageous Fund was able to help Beardo (named by his rescuer) keep his leg, and pay for his medical care.
Beardo was adopted by his rescuer and caregiver and is looking forward to finally living the good life, after so many very rough years outside. They don't all get a chance like Beardo. Just this week, a kitty from the same colony sustained a fatal injury to his tail and spinal cord, that we never got to help. We do what we do for the happy endings, but unfortunately they don't always turn out that way.
