Surf. Surge. Salt. Instinct. Rust. Reclamation.
These are some of the elements and processes Trevor Mezak tries to celebrate in his work. The foundation under all of it is an appreciation for the natural world and industries that share in its raw power. Every day he turns to surfing as a kind of ritual, a way to center his body and his creative process. To feel the crash of the waves, the grit of the sand, the adrenaline of rising and falling beneath the surface – this all culminates in an exchange of energies that he is likewise looking to impart onto his work through tactile abstraction.
When Trevor got the board, it was the day before the oil spill happened on the Southern California coast. He collected some of the oil from the spill and mixed that with tar which made up the bottom dark space to represent the destruction he saw. By using rusted nails, he reflected on the age of the beaches and how they have been around much longer than we have. He has spent so much of his life in the ocean, and that has impacted him as an artist and a surfer. Seeing the coastline covered in oil was heartbreaking, so he decided to create a piece that will bring awareness to the fact that we need to protect our oceans and prevent disasters like this in the future. His board is designed on a Brawner surfboard.

Packing, shipping, and handling are not included. Boards can be picked up at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel or the purchaser can arrange for shipping. Boards will be available for pick-up and shipping after Monday, January 3, 2022. Boards must be picked up no later than Monday, January 31, 2022.
