FRESHFARM Markets is a 501 (c) 3 non profit organization comprised of 11 farmers markets in the Washington DC metro area. The mission of FRESHFARM Markets is to build and strengthen the local food movement in the Chesapeake Bay region and provide economic opportunities for local farmers and producers. We connect urban, suburban and rural communities to the farms that sustain them, and educate our market communities about the health and environmental benefits of buying and eating locally grown food. FRESHFARM farmers and producers have set the standard: they sell only what they grow, raise, catch or make. As a result, we have created dynamic and vibrant market communities which have become a magnet for chefs, families and food lovers everywhere. Our farmers represent more than 9,000 actively farmed acres in the Bay. During the 2010 season, our farmers and producers served over 10,000 customers per week, and through our Gleaning program, donated annually over 41,000 pounds of fresh food to local emergency food providers. Our other educational outreach programs include the Foodprints program for DC schoolchildren, the Matching Dollars program for under served customers, and the Chef at Market program which teaches our customers how to cook with market produce at home. Our Farmers Fund provides funding to farmers and producers who want to attend critical, yet expensive, training workshops. Through experiences such as our Farmland Feast benefit and auction, we have been able to reach both under-served and well-served populations of shoppers: friends, families, neigbors, environmentalists, gardeners, health professionals and new healthy eaters. All these communities benefit from fresh, nourishing, delicious and seasonal food.
