Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic bone disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. A cough can break a rib, or putting on a T-shirt can break an arm. A child or adult with OI in its mildest form might only experience a handful of fractures, while those with more severe forms can experience hundreds of fractures and suffer from numerous complications during their lifetime, which can include loss of hearing, brittle teeth, or respiratory difficulties. The mission of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Foundation is to improve the quality of life for people with OI through research to find treatments and a cure, education, awareness, and mutual support. The OI Foundation responds to more than 6,000 inquiries each year; holds a National Conference for families; produces informational fact sheets, books, and other resources; facilitates the operation of support groups across the country; and funds approximately $1 million in research activities annually.
