Late Onset Tay-Sachs is a genetic disease that must be carried by both parents to pass on to an newborn. Tay-Sachs was thought only to be a disease of infants which is fatal usually by age 3 yrs. In the late 1970's it was discovered that there are adults and teenagers living with Tay-Sachs disease. The lack of an important enzyme called Hex-A is what is deficient in those with Tay-Sachs Disease. Infants have a total lack of this enzyme and adults have a minimal amount which causes the disease as the person ages to be progressive. Symptoms are balance, coordination, leg weakness, speech impediment, swallowing difficulties, loss of ability to climb steps and eventually walking. Most often misdiagnosed as ALS, Muscular Dystrophy, Ataxia, and other similar diseases. There is no treatment or cure. There is however a test to diagnosis if someone has this disease.
