A "Buy It Now" item: 5th Grade Science Coastal Stewardship – Instrumentation for Recording/Documenting
GPS: Garmin Rhino 655T (TOPO 100K maps, barometric altimeter, 3-axis electronic compass, 5 MP camera) for use in the 5th grade science curriculum.
The 5th grade Coastal Stewardship program has students creating marine animal and plant surveys, measuring sand slope with Emory rods, and cleaning many pounds of trash from nearby Black Cove (Stinky Beach). The GPS, in conjunction with the Vernier Mobile Data Recorder, will take this program to the next level – the ability to match date/time/tide with quantitation and recording of water salinity, pH, and oxygen saturation. This data will be shared with our partners at Salem Sound Coast Watch and recorded for longitudinal studies here at Brookwood. The students benefit, the school benefits, and the community benefits from greater attention to this work.
