Item Description

Join Barbara Bash at the Shambhala Meditation Center of Los Angeles on October 2 & 3, 2010, for Brush Spirit: The Expressive Line.

In the deepest sense calligraphy is the experience of moving through space and leaving tracks behind. It is the visual voice of the moment. The brush is the most sensitive of calligraphic tools, able to respond to the subtlest gesture. Beginning with the ancient Chinese straight line practice, participants will explore the principles of heaven, earth, and human, through the bones of traditional pictograms and then the openness of large brush strokes.

An interest in visual language is the only prerequisite.

Barbara Bash is a calligrapher and illustrator who has worked for many years exploring the dialogue between Buddhist principles and the artistic process. While directing the Book Arts program at Naropa University , she collaborated with storytellers, musicians, dancers and poets in performance. Her study of Dharma Art with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Chinese pictograms with Ed Young deepened her interest in mixing eastern principles and western art forms. Her most recent book is True Nature: An Illustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitude, published by Shambhala Publications.

Founded in 1971 by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche the Shambhala Meditation Center of Los Angeles is a place for the practice of meditation, study of Buddhist and Shambhala teachings.
