Item Description
Gems From Diamond Mountain
The Diamond Mountain District occupies the northernmost part of Napa Valley's famed Mayacamas Mountains. This is the range that defines the western boundary of the Napa Valley and it's sloping vineyards, with elevations ranging from 400 to 2200 feet. Prized volcanic soils give the wines of the region their characteristic depth of flavor, strength and minerality. It was the eruption of Mt. Konocti on the south shore of Clear Lake eight million years ago that is credited with contributing great quantities of volcanic ash to the mountain's soil composition, and the volcanic glass crystals in the soil give Diamond Mountain its name.
The district itself encompasses some 5,000 acres, of which less than 500 are planted to vines, making its acreage under vine the smallest of any Napa Valley AVA. Most of the vineyards are small and family owned, the wines made in small quantities with limited distribution.
The Cabernets from this AVA are bold and elegant with wonderful blue berry fruit nuances and tannins that resemble "an iron fist in a velvet glove". Although they all share some characteristics common to the District, each is distinct, with different nuances particular to their respective microclimates and terroir.
