Item Description

NOTE: We had a wonderful opportunity to make Sandra Fluke available for a consulting session with the highest bidder in this auction, but unfortunately, due to a disturbingly high number of harassing responses to this item, we have decided to close the auction two days early.  We congratulate the winning bidder, and we apologize to those who share our enthusiasm to collaborate with Sandra and expected an opportunity to continue bidding on this auction item.

Got a fantastic idea for a campaign but not sure where to start? Wondering how you can use the tools of activism to make your project the most effective it can be? Social justice advocate Sandra Fluke will help you harness the power of activism and/or advocacy with this strategy session. You bring the expertise on your issue, and Sandra will bring her sharp strategic mind and national experience.

From the beginning, Sandra Fluke has devoted her career to public interest advocacy. She came to national attention in February, 2012, when Congressional Republicans prohibited her from testifying, instead hearing from a panel of men on a question of women’s health. She then testified before the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee on the need for women’s own private insurance to cover contraception. Despite personal attacks, she has since spoken about this and other issues of concern to women and young people across news outlets, and has addressed the Democratic National Convention. Currently, she serves as a surrogate for the President in his reelection campaign, and speaks to audiences across the country. Her work has been honored by the American Federation of Teachers, American Constitution Society, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, National Partnership for Women and Families, NOW, Women’s Campaign Fund, and others.

Fluke recently graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center as a Public Interest Law Scholar with a Certificate in Refugee and Humanitarian Emergencies. She was awarded the 2012 National Association of Women Lawyers Award, and was recognized for her extensive pro bono representation of victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, and human rights advocacy in Kenya. In 2010, the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles awarded Fluke the Fran Kandel Public Interest Grant to produce an informative film on accessing restraining orders. At Georgetown, Fluke served on the boards of the gender journal and student advocacy groups focused on gay rights, women’s rights, reproductive justice, and human trafficking, a group she co-founded.

Prior to attending Georgetown, Fluke created and led the Program Evaluation Initiative for Sanctuary for Families. She also served on numerous state and city advocacy coalitions, including the Manhattan Borough President’s Taskforce on Domestic Violence, and co-founded the New York Statewide Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which, after a 20 year stalemate, successfully lobbied for legislation allowing LGBTQ, teen, and other victims of intimate partner violence to access civil orders of protection.

In 2003, Fluke received a B.S. from Cornell University in Policy Analysis and Management, as well as Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She currently lives in Los Angeles, California, with her fiancé, Adam, and their dog, Mr. President.
